Jazz à Vienne × Sesc Jazz is an artistic exchange initiative between Brazil and France, developed in partnership with Sesc São Paulo, the Jazz à Vienne Festival, Institut Français, the Cultural Service of the French Consulate in São Paulo and the Centre National de la Musique (CNM).
Through artistic residencies, the project brings together musicians from both countries to create original repertoire and present performances in international contexts. Each edition results in the formation of a new ensemble, specifically conceived for the collaboration, with its own artistic identity and circulation across both territories.
The project unfolds in three main phases throughout the year:
-
Residency in Brazil (early in the year), with a one-week creative process at Sesc São Paulo and an open rehearsal;
-
Residency and performances in France (July), including a premiere at the Jazz à Vienne Festival and additional concerts;
-
Return to Brazil (October), with performances at Sesc Jazz and across the Sesc São Paulo network.
More than a touring project, this initiative represents a complete cycle of creation, exchange and circulation, fostering long-term artistic connections and strengthening cultural dialogue between Brazil and France.
EDITION 2023
Irmandade Ensemble
The first edition resulted in the creation of Irmandade Ensemble, a quartet bringing together emerging artists from the Brazilian and French jazz scenes. The group was formed during a residency in São Paulo and premiered at Sesc Jazz, marking the beginning of the collaboration between partner institutions.
Composed of two Brazilian and two French musicians, the ensemble explores a spontaneous approach to jazz, blending Brazilian traditions with contemporary international influences.
The lineup included Ananda Brandão, Ana Karina Sebastião, Raphaële Atlan and Sintia Piccin, combining strong individual artistic trajectories.
During the project, French pianist Clélya Abraham participated in the initial phases in Brazil and France, with Raphaële Atlan joining the ensemble for the Brazilian touring phase.
The 2023 edition established the project’s structure, defining its model of residency, collective creation and international circulation.
EDITION 2024
Sampaienne
The second edition consolidated the project’s format with the creation of Sampaienne, a group formed by four musicians with diverse backgrounds spanning classical music, jazz and Brazilian popular music.
The ensemble brought together Tamiris Silveira, Sthe Araujo, Lucie Jahier and Helena Recalde in a residency process focused on collective creation, experimentation and the development of original repertoire.
The project unfolded in three phases: a residency in São Paulo, a premiere at the Jazz à Vienne Festival and a touring circuit in Brazil, expanding its reach and reinforcing its international dimension.
Sampaienne deepened the project’s approach to cross-cultural collaboration and confirmed its potential as a platform for artistic development and circulation.
EDITION 2025
Diáspora Lyannaj
The 2025 edition expands the project’s scope by incorporating musical influences from the Caribbean and the African diaspora, alongside Brazil and France.
The ensemble Diáspora Lyannaj brings together Vanessa Ferreira, Fábio Leandro, Boris Reine-Adélaïde and Ysaura Merino in a formation that merges jazz, Brazilian, Caribbean and Afro-diasporic traditions.
Trumpeter Ysaura Merino participated in the initial creation phase in Brazil, while saxophonist Samy Thiébault joined the project for the performance phases in France and Brazil.
This edition reinforces the transatlantic dimension of the project, expanding its cultural dialogue beyond the Brazil–France axis.
